Quantified Self Talk: The Dilemma of Leisure Time

I gave a talk last month at the San Francisco Quantified Self meetup about the time tracking project I’ve been doing over the past 6 years. I would say more, but I don’t want to steal my own thunder. – Greg Kroleski

Every Day Of My Life

Every Day of My Life is a visualization of my computer usage statistics from the last 2.5 years. Each line represents one day and each colorful block is the most foreground app running at the given moment. Black areas are periods when my computer is not turned on. Seeping patterns (or lack of them) and time of holidays and travel (longer gaps) can be therefore easily identified. – Marcin Ignac

Life Calendar: How Was Your Day?

Life Calendar: How was your day? is a funny and unique calendar in which you can reflect graphically your every day mood. It can be used as a mini personal diary of life experiences and help us to be conscious with our own wellbeing. Each day can be represented by a clear emoticon face to draw how you felt that day. Knitting Personal Data

Yes, you'll need yarn, needles and basic knitting skills. But most importantly, you'll need a sense of whimsy and adventure. These surprising patterns will inspire you to look out your window, ride the subway and converse with your next-door neighbor. They will have you re-reading your favorite book and feeding a pocketful of coins into the gumball machine in front of your supermarket. In order to knit these unique one-of-a-kind garments, you'll be sent out into the world – and deep within your heart – turning something as simple as a scarf into an unexpectedly storied object. – Leafcutter Designs

Good Night SMS

Being in a long distance relationship requires a thoughtful way of communication. A text message as a rudimental and reliable fragment at the end of every day, that you don’t see each other, helps to make oneself more tangible, but also to reflect happenings like a diary would do. As a gift for our second anniversary I visualised my SMS in form of a necklace for my former girlfriend. – Paul Heinicker

The Examined Life

I have meticulously recorded my daily actions for a total of 40 days. Everything I have done has been organized into 6 categories and brought to life through color and form. Patterns and contrast emerge through visualization, providing permanence to previously transient data and facilitating a new level of self-awareness.
The physical presence of these forms symbolizes the knowledge gained by collecting and analyzing the data. Data are abstract; they have no physical presence and no inherent structure, but our brains evolved to understand the real world, not abstract concepts. By making data tangible, it changes the way we understand and interact with it, augmenting our minds’ ability to grasp digital and mathematical abstractions. – Alex Getty

Loci

Each loci is a unique 3D printed sculpture bespoke to someone’s flights spurring recollection, reflection and conversation about their travels. Each loci comes with a card highlighting on a map all the airports flown to. The sculpture can be placed on this card to help visualize their travels. Additional information is displayed on the card, such as the title chosen by the user, the total distance travelled, the number of airports visited, and the number of flights taken. The software generates a file suitable for 3D printing, so that the user can print it. – Andrew Spitz

Crystalized

The Crystallized app by Softlab takes your social relationships and converts them into a tessellated geode type form with a crystaline internal structure. Each external point on the geode represents a friend with the distance from the center defined by the number of mutual friends while the internal structure is defined by the interaction between the two of you. So your ex-girlfriend may be represented by a giant spike on the outside with small crystals inside while your father may be a relatively flat area with big internal spikes. You can then 3D print out your geode to hold your social network in your hands. – Shapeways

Location Based Jewellery

Location data typically stays within the realm of online maps and digital check-ins, but in many ways it's the most personal data that you can find. It represents where you are, where you've been, and where you're going. Meshu, by Sha Hwang and Rachel Binx, is a project that takes this sentiment to heart. Select and enter locations on a map or grab your check-ins from foursquare to create your own piece of unique jewelry — necklace, earrings, or cufflinks. Once you've got your design, you have your choice of acrylic, wood, nylon, and silver and you can pick from a variety of colors for each material. Hit complete, they'll fabricate it, and you've got your own personal snapshot of life. – FlowingData
